“He parted the heavens and came down; dark clouds were under his feet…

He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me.

Psalm 18:9, 19

In Hebrews 2, the author wrote that In order to bring many children to God’s glory, it was“fitting” for Jesus to endure suffering. I was moved by the word "fitting", as it sounds so proper, certain, and decisive - that it was right, and so it was done accordingly. Yet in truth, Christ’s redemption has been grace all along. It came entirely out of His own willingness; it was richly lavished, and no one deserved it.

The fact that Jesus acknowledges us as God’s children and His Co-heir, despite all creations were made for Him and through Him, is incredibly profound. Considering our human nature - like worm in the mire, that is small, fragile and constantly surrounded by darkness - Christ has not despised us. While the rightful, older brother in the parable of the prodigal son, sought fairness and rejected his undeserving brother, Jesus sacrificed his own body, broken for our sake, in order to save us. He is not ashamed to call us brothers and sisters.

Lastly, the author of Hebrews wrote that Jesus shared our in our humanity because we, the children, have flesh and blood. For 30+ years, He was willing to live through times of poverty, sickness, and grief, unto death. His self-giving shattered our bondage of sin and freed us from its slavery. He became the first to rise in glory and to never die anymore. He pioneered the way: Though we who believe in Him still face physical death, in the spirit we receive new life through Him. And in the future, we will have new bodies that reflect His glory. Moverover, He knows it all - the pain and suffering - and we could come boldly and seek comfort.

His way of deliverance shattered the world’s expectation of what a “Redeemer” should be. Instead, Jesus had done so in such the humblest and most humiliating way, and yet the most real, powerful and gentle – so that those who believe in Him may know Him and enjoy eternal life with Him.
