"Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work." (2 Timothy 2:21)

On this painting, I drew some items I have on my desk, most of them are used for art. (Can you find some verses from Psalm 51 written on the items above?) A crowd of grey bunnies are hopping and resting around these items. I like that detestable clumps of dusts are adorably described as "dust bunnies". If I do not clean my desk for a year, it will certainly look like this painting.

Likewise, our inner being needs cleaning regularly as well to keep it always clean. Here are some reasons of doing so:

  • "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God." Matthew 5:8)

  • "...whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life." (Galatians 6:7-8)

Scripture gives us a description of what is dishonorable, that makes us unclean:

"But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. (Ephesians 5:3-4)

Instead what we should be doing is to:

  • Avoid temptations and sins at all cost, and firmly turn away from it:

“Do not set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evildoers. Avoid it, do not travel on it; turn from it and go on your way.” (Proverbs 4:14-15)

  • Aim to be like Christ with self-control

“Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.” (Romans 13:14)

  • Be obedient to the truth, and love each other earnestly

“Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart.” (1 Peter 1:22)

Just as I should not let my art tools collect dust to the point they become unusable, I should do the same for my heart. The key is that once we get rid of impurity and maintain purity, we are set apart as holy and "ready for every good work" for God's use.
