Erica Kirk
When I think of forgiveness, I think of:
Erica Kirk’s touching memorial speech. While bitterness sticks, stinks, and ruins, her forgiveness releases, renews and transforms. It is grace to the undeserved, and an inspiring testimony for the world, and breaking the cycle of vengeance.
Jim Elliot, a young missionary martyred under the spears of the Aucas tribe, and his wife Elisabeth Elliot, whom after the incident, lived among those same people with her 2yo daughter, loving them by God’s love.
Corrie ten Boom, incarcerated for hiding Jews during WWI, whose father and sister died a tragic death inside the camp–shook with hatred upon identifying the traitor. However, God revealed to her how toxic hate is - which, as Jesus said, it equates to murder - and reminded her how much she had been forgiven. The night she presented her forgiveness before the Lord, and she was freed within and slept soundly.

These powerful examples show me that forgiveness is Spirit-led. God doesn’t underestimate our emotional turmoil of deep sorrow and resentment. Instead He is merciful toward the authentic, vulnerable side of us: His beloved Son Jesus suffered deeply for our sake, and welcome us into His grace and mercy.
Even so, He calls us to forgive, not to dismiss justice, but to be truly freed from bitterness and hate. As we shift our gaze to the New heavens new Earth, trusting in God’s justice and vengeance, our pain seems lighter. Forgiveness flows when God’s love fills us to the brim, overflowing toward others. I, like all, am a work in progress. I don’t know what will come, but I believe that forgiveness is at hand when the Lord helps.
“To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you.”
